The sumo season starts in January, with Grand Tournaments (basho) held over a 15-day period every two months: Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Sept and Nov.
I prefer watching Sumo to other sports because I get to know the result of the bout within few seconds. Which other sports get to know the results so quickly?
This month's tournament ended today and finally, it was won by a Japanese! Huh? Should be Japanese, right??? Well, the last 7 tournaments were won by yokozuna (Grand Champion) Asashoryu from Mongolia. This month, it was won by Japanese ozeki (2nd rank) Tochiazuma, who happened to by my favourite sumo wrestler (just because I bumped into him twice while shopping in a supermarket so he became my favourite! Lame excuse!)

How much does it cost to watch a match?
There are two basic types of tickets. Japanese style box - you sit on the floor. Arena seat - just like the stadium seating.
* The price of a Japanese box starts at approximately ¥36,800** (RM1,200) with one box seating four people.
* The price of an arena seat starts at approximately ¥3,600** (RM120).
** Prices will vary slightly between venues.
Whew! That's expensive. I was just comparing to the Canadian equivalent of hockey (ice hockey to the rest of the world). You need AT LEAST C$80 for a game and that is before other things like parking, snacks, drinks, etc. They come up to a sum! When in Malaysia we just pay RM4 for a Merdeka tournament match. Imagine!
